Salmo Fibreni.

Species description.

Salmo Fibreni or Fibreno trout is a small trout species with a maximum length of 20cm. As it name suggests it is a species from lake Fibreno and it can sometimes enter the lakes tributaries.  It can be recognised by it its 7-11 large parr-marks which are also found in the adult fish and about 15-20 reddish brown spots that are about the same size as it’s eyes.

Behaviour.

This species mostly feeds on aquatic insects and spawns in December or January around the spring in the lake. It can also sometimes be found in the tributaries of the lake. The species is found together with its close relative Salmo Cettii which grows larger and spawns in the early spring.

Threats.

The biggest threats for Fibreno trout are pollution and introduction of other species and warming of the lake since it normally is around 10c year-round. Since this species only inhabits 1 lake and some of its tributary waters chances are high that if something happens to this lake this species will be extirpated.

Distribution.

The Native range of this species is very small (the lake it self is only 0.29 km²) and this small lake in Italy is its only native water.
