Salvelinus, or char as they are commonly known is a genus of freshwater fish with some species having anadromous lives meaning they live sub-adult to adult life at sea but spawn and grow up for 1 or 2 years in fresh water. This genus has a circumpolar distribution. And they are mostly cold water species. Most char can be recognised by their dark bodies with light cream to pink or red spots.
