Ribiška Družina Bohinj (RD Bohinj).

Founded in 1999, Ribiška Družina Bohinj manages the fishing waters of the Bohinj region, located in the heart of the Julian Alps and largely within Triglav National Park. Despite being a relatively young fishing family, RD Bohinj is responsible for some of Slovenia’s most iconic alpine salmonid waters, with a strong focus on habitat protection and sustainable management. The club’s waters are defined by cold, clear alpine conditions and natural flow regimes. Management prioritizes salmonid species and places emphasis on preserving the wild character of both rivers and lake fisheries.

Regulations.

  • Fly fishing and spin fishing are permitted, depending on the specific water and section.
  • Only artificial lures and flies may be used.
  • Barbless hooks are mandatory.
  • Fishing is restricted to one rod only.
  • Certain sections operate under stricter regimes, including fly-fishing-only or catch-and-release rules.

Fishing season.

  • General season: 1 March – 14 November.
  • Mostnica and Savica open later (1 June)

Waters Managed by RD Bohinj.

RD Bohinj manages several key waters in the upper Sava Bohinjka basin. These include a large alpine lake and cold, fast-flowing rivers and streams. The waters range from accessible main-river stretches to small, highly technical alpine tributaries.

  • Lake Bohinj – Slovenia’s largest permanent natural lake and the centerpiece of the Bohinj region. Cold, deep, and exceptionally clear, the lake supports salmonid species such as Brown Trout, and Grayling, alongside non-salmonid species including pike and cyprinids. Fly fishing, spin fishing, and controlled trolling are permitted. Due to its size and depth, fishing conditions can change quickly and local knowledge is beneficial.
  • Sava Bohinjka – Flowing out of Lake Bohinj, this river forms the uppermost section of the Sava system. It is one of Slovenia’s most renowned salmonid rivers, holding strong populations of Brown Trout, Grayling, and Rainbow Trout. The river features fast runs, deep pools, and gravel stretches, offering a mix of accessible fishing and more technical water suited to experienced anglers.
  • Mostnica – A cold alpine tributary flowing through the narrow Mostnica Gorge before joining the Sava Bohinjka. The stream is small, clear, and highly technical, holding predominantly wild Brown Trout. Fish are wary and access is limited in places, making this water best suited for experienced fly anglers.

Licenses.

Fishing licenses for RD Bohinj waters are issued per water and per day. Licenses can be purchased online or from authorized local vendors. Each permit is valid only for the specific water and date indicated on the license.
