Projects We Support.
As a young and growing charity, our financial resources are still limited, but our mission is not.
Even before we can provide substantial funding, we believe it is important to raise awareness, highlight effective conservation work, and connect people with the initiatives that are protecting Europe’s native trout and their habitats. Below is an overview of projects across Europe that are actively working on restoration, protection, and scientific understanding of native trout lineages and their ecosystems. As we grow, these are the types of initiatives we aim to support through future donations, outreach, and collaboration.
Projects are listed by country.
Austria:
- Reintroduction of the Urforelle (Danubian Brown Trout Lineage).
Led primarily by the Tiroler Fischereiverband, this project focuses on restoring genetically pure Danubian-lineage brown trout to their native alpine streams. It is one of the most advanced native trout restoration programmes in Europe and will receive our first official donation.
Italy:
- LIFE GrayMarble.
A major EU-funded project focused on the conservation and recovery of marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) and Adriatic grayling (Thymallus aeliani). The initiative works across several river systems to restore habitat, improve genetic protection, and reduce hybridisation. - LIFE STREAMS.
A multi-regional project dedicated to the conservation of native Mediterranean brown trout (Salmo ghigii) in Italy. LIFE STREAMS focuses on habitat restoration, removal of invasive lineages, and the re-establishment of genetically pure local populations.
The Netherlands:
- Vissen voor Verbinding.
A restoration initiative focused on reconnecting fragmented freshwater systems, restoring fish migration routes, and improving habitat for migratory species such as sea trout. The official project concluded in 2025, but elements such as stocking efforts continue, helping to support long-term recovery.
United Kingdom:
- Wild Trout Trust
A highly respected organisation working across the UK to improve rivers for trout and other wildlife. The Trust carries out habitat restoration, provides training, and supports local river groups with practical conservation tools.
Balkan countries:
- Balkan River Defence
A grassroots movement dedicated to protecting the last free-flowing rivers in Europe from hydropower development. The initiative works across multiple Balkan countries, combining activism, science, and media to prevent river degradation and preserve critical habitats for native fish species. - Save the Blue Heart of Europe
A large-scale conservation campaign focused on safeguarding the Balkan Peninsula’s rivers, often referred to as the “Blue Heart of Europe.” The initiative aims to stop unsustainable dam development and protect thousands of kilometres of free-flowing rivers that are essential for biodiversity, including native trout and other freshwater species.
