The Fisheries Research Institute of Slovenia (ZZRS) is Slovenia’s national authority for fisheries research, management, and conservation. Unlike local fishing clubs, ZZRS oversees a range of key fishing districts, that are instrumental in preserving wild trout populations, including Marble Trout, and supporting sustainable angling through hatchery programs and habitat protection.

Rivers managed by the ZZRS.
ZZRS manages 12 important rivers in both the Soča River basin and the Danube River basin.These waters range from pristine alpine streams to large trophy rivers, offering anglers opportunities for Marble Trout, Grayling, Brown Trout, and even Huchen in selected rivers.
Soca River basin:
- Soča – The pristine upper Soča from is managed from Trenta to Čezsoča. It is home to Marble Trout, hybrids, Rainbow Trout, and some grayling. It’s celebrated for its crystal-clear waters and rewarding fly-fishing.
- Lepena – A wild, scenic mountain stream that feeds into the Soča. Known for its elusive Marble Trout, this water is best suited to skilled anglers.
- Koritnica – A rugged, wild tributary of the Soča with dense alpine landscapes. Marble trout inhabit its waters, offering technical fly-fishing in dramatic surroundings.
Danube River basin:
- Krka – A karst river with emerald waters and limestone pools. Supports healthy stocks of Brown Trout and Grayling, offering technical fishing in a scenic setting.
- Iščica – A smaller karst tributary, known for clear flows and wild trout. A quiet option for anglers who enjoy intimate streams.
- Radovna – A mountain stream near Bled, holding wild Brown and Rainbow Trout. Clear water and good accessibility make it popular but still rewarding.
- Sava – One of Slovenia’s largest rivers, with separate trout and Hucho seasons. Wide and powerful, best explored with guidance.
- Obrh – A short karst river near Lož. It sinks underground and is part of the wider karst system connected to the Krka springs, offering a unique environment for wild trout.
- Sava Bohinjka – A renowned river that flows out of Lake Bohinj and joins the Sava Dolinka at Radovljica. It is one of Slovenia’s most iconic fly-fishing rivers, with a mix of fast runs, deep pools, and gravel stretches. The river is home to Brown Trout, Grayling, Rainbow Trout, and in winter becomes a key Huchen fishery.
- Malenščica – A short karst spring creek, stable in flow and temperature, with strong wild trout populations. Technical but rewarding.
- Unica – A classic karst chalk-stream, famous for fly-fishing and wild Grayling. Slow currents and clear water demand careful presentation.
- Kolpa – Designated Hucho-only water. A trophy river with strict regulations, offering one of the most challenging but rewarding fishing experiences in Slovenia.
Licenses.
A single license only gives rights to fish that single water managed by ZZRS. Licenses can be purchased online or through authorized partners.
