Ribiška Družina Dolomiti (RD Dolomiti).

Ribiška Družina Dolomiti (RD Dolomiti) manages a group of rivers and streams west of Ljubljana, in the transition zone between the Polhov Gradec Dolomites and the Ljubljanica basin. The club oversees a mixture of smaller salmonid streams and lowland waters, offering a very different fishing environment from the large alpine rivers of northwestern Slovenia. The district is characterized by smaller-scale rivers flowing through forested valleys, villages, and karst-influenced terrain. Fishing is generally more intimate and technical, particularly on the trout streams.

Regulations.

  • Fly fishing only for trout and grayling, but huchen can be caught with spin fishing
  • Barbless hooks only
  • Only one artificial fly or lure may be used
  • Check the permit for section-specific restrictions

Fishing season.

  • General season: 1 April – 30 September.
  • Huchen season: 1 October – 14 February

Rivers Managed by RD Dolomiti.

RD Dolomiti manages a diverse group of smaller rivers and streams within the Ljubljanica catchment.

  • Gradaščica – The Gradaščica is the club’s main river, flowing from the Polhov Gradec hills toward Ljubljana. In its upper reaches it offers smaller-scale trout fishing with structured flow, pools, and riffles. The river supports Brown Trout and Grayling, together with stocked Rainbow Trout in some sections. Huchen are also present in the lower reaches.
  • Horjulka – A tributary of the Gradaščica flowing through a narrow valley landscape. It is a smaller and more intimate stream, suited to technical fishing with lighter tackle. Brown Trout and Grayling are the primary salmonid species, while Huchen may also be encountered in parts of the system.
  • Božna – A small tributary with clear water and localized trout habitat. Fishing here is more precise and suited to anglers who enjoy small-stream conditions.
  • Mala Voda – One of the smallest waters in the district, offering highly intimate fishing in a natural environment. Access and casting can be challenging due to vegetation and stream size.

Summary.

RD Dolomiti represents the smaller-stream and karst-influenced side of central Slovenian fisheries management. Rather than large alpine rivers, the club focuses on intimate tributaries and technical salmonid waters flowing through the Polhov Gradec Dolomites region. With rivers such as the Gradaščica and Horjulka, RD Dolomiti offers a quieter and more localized trout fishing experience within the Ljubljanica basin, contrasting strongly with Slovenia’s better-known alpine destinations.
