Ribiška Družina Žiri (RD Žiri).

Founded in 1955, Ribiška Družina Žiri manages the upper Poljanska Sora around Žiri and has a long history of fisheries management and trout conservation. Organized fishing in the Žiri area dates back to 1953, when local anglers obtained their own fishing district within the Ljubljana Fishing Association. The independent RD Žiri was formally established in 1955. The club has also developed its own fish-farming operation, producing Brown Trout for conservation and fisheries management. Its hatchery continues to work with locally sourced brood fish from the surrounding streams.

RD Žiri manages sections of the Poljanska Sora, one of the main rivers of the Sora system. The upper Sora is a classic grayling river, with clear flowing water, gravel sections, deeper pools, and numerous smaller tributaries.

• Poljanska Sora – The Poljanska Sora around Žiri is a varied alpine river with numerous bends, deep pools, gravel runs, and alternating faster and slower water. The river is particularly well suited to fly fishing and is known as a classic Grayling water. The river supports European Grayling, Brown Trout, and Huchen, together with Rainbow Trout. The upper section is especially notable for its Brown Trout and stable Grayling population, while Huchen are also present throughout the system. The club describes the Huchen population as relatively stable, although the fish do not generally reach the exceptional sizes found in some larger Slovenian rivers. The two RD Žiri fishing sections offer somewhat different characteristics. The upper section provides classic grayling and trout fishing, while the lower section additionally offers dedicated Huchen fishing. Ribiške Karte lists Brown Trout, Grayling and Huchen among the target species of the lower section.

Native Brown Trout Management

Brown Trout conservation is an important part of RD Žiri's fisheries management. The club operates its own hatchery and annually collects approximately 150,000 Brown Trout eggs from locally sourced brood fish, primarily from streams including Sovra and Brekovica, with some brood fish also coming from the Sora. The club states that its Brown Trout population is believed to retain a Black Sea lineage without signs of Atlantic or other trout influence, although it also notes that further analysis would be needed for formal confirmation.

Licenses.

Fishing permits for RD Žiri waters can be purchased through Ribiške Karte and through the club's local sales points. Separate permits are available for the different Poljanska Sora sections, including fly-fishing permits and a dedicated Huchen permit for the lower section.
